The Aquarium in San Sebastian

It is almost inevitable that when on holiday with a toddler, you will end up in an aquarium. You have a couple of hours to kill, perhaps the weather isn’t great, there’s not much else that is toddler-friendly… So on our recent weekend break we of course visited the aquarium in San Sebastian.

The aquarium in San Sebastian is in a picturesque location, perched at the end of the harbour. This makes it easily accessible, a short stroll from the old town. Although were a bit dense and took a few moments to find the perfectly obvious entrance… Once inside, there are some great views back over the bay and the city.

I thought in interesting to combine the aquarium with a museum about the maritime history of the area. But I must admit that there was not much in the museum part to capture the attention of a toddler. There was an area decked out like the inside of a pirate ship with some books to read, which kept us entertained for a while. Other than that, it was pretty much just a space to run around and explore.

I really liked a large tuna fish made out of tin and iron. It was created by an artist collective called Skeleton Sea. Their aim is to raise awareness of the state of coastlines and seas around the world. This was made mostly from empty tuna cans found on the beaches of Fuerteventura.

However, the fish were a big hit. Particularly the 360 degree tunnel; it’s not every day that you experience a shark swimming over your head.

There are also plenty of other smaller tanks with the types of colourful exhibits that catch the eye of a toddler.

Happy fish watching if you have a couple of hours spare in San Sebastian!

  1. I’ve only been to one aquarium in my life, but I absolutely loved it. My friend always posts the cutest pictures of her girls at the aquarium, so I can see how it’s a big hit with little ones! That fish made out of tuna cans is incredible. I love the texture and depth to it! #Citytripping
