A Day Out in Pettneu am Arlberg With a Baby (Austria)

Pettneu am Arlberg with a baby

A day out in Pettneu am Arlberg with a baby makes a nice alternative to St Anton. It may not be an obvious choice. Pettneu is a village around 6km from St Anton. It lies at the foot of the peak known as the Hohe Riffler, from whose summit you can enjoy breathtaking views all the way to the Allgäu or the Eastern Alps of Switzerland. In winter it is easily accessible on the free ski bus in around 8 minutes.

2 Indoor Activities to do in Pettneu am Arlberg with a baby (in winter)

  1. The Wellness Park in Pettneu has a children’s pool (as well as pool, sauna, and solarium for the adults). If you are there for less than 2.5 hours it works out cheaper than the pool in St Anton. In 2017 it was 5.50 Euros for adults and children under 6 are free. I find that 2.5 hours is plenty of time with a baby. D loves using her Fings and playing with an inflatable ball in the pool.
  2. By now it must be time for lunch! There is a cafe in the Wellness Park itself if you want to spend some more time there. Or you could walk up in to the village to the bakery if you just fancy a snack or a cake. I always seem to be mentioning cake…

2 Outdoor Activities to do in Pettneu am Arlberg with a baby (in winter)

  1. The playground in Pettneu is just outside the Wellness Park. Be warned that it can be a bit tricky to get into in the winter. There is a tendency for the snow cleared from the car park to pile up in the entrance gate.
  2. If you have a rugged all terrain buggy there is a nice walk by the Rosanna river. But this is also a cross counrty skiing track so you will need a buggy like ours that can cope with snow. This is best avoided after a recent snow fall or in freeze-thaw conditions in the spring, as these both make the track tricky with a buggy. If you are feeling particularly intrepid you can follow this path all the way back to St Anton. This takes about 1 hour 10 minutes and is around 5.3km. This walk is overall uphill which to be honest I do notice in places with a buggy. And handily ends at another bakery for, yes, you’ve guessed it, more cake… Or you could of course walk the other way from St Anton to Pettneu which is downhill.

Getting There

In winter you can simply hop on the number 9 bus from St Anton, which takes you to the Wellness Park. And it is free! The winter bus timetables can be found here.
