Hounslow Urban Farm with a Toddler

Hounslow Urban Farm with a Toddler

Hounslow Urban Farm is one of the most urban of the London city farms that we have visited. Whilst there are plenty of farm animals to pet, the large planes landing at nearby Heathrow are a constant reminder of your city location. In terms of activities for toddlers, this is best urban farm we have visited in London. Read on to find out why it is great fun visiting Hounslow Urban Farm with a toddler…

Hounslow Urban Farm: Farm Animals

As you may expect, there are a wide range of farm animals to feed and pet. We made one additional purchase of some animal feed; the entry fee includes all other activities. Most animals are of the cute, minature variety. My particular favourites were the cheeky goats, one of which jumped the fence and escaped from its field, and the ponies. I think Daisy preferred the rabbits (I have so far managed to avoid answering the question of whether she can have her own rabbit…). It did not feel too busy when we were there because the farm animals are spread out over a decent sized site, even though it was a weekend. The site is not so large that little legs cannot manage a lap or two.

Hounslow Urban Farm: More Unusual Animals

This is where I think Hounslow Urban Farm gets interesting! One of the very first activities we did on arrival was billed the ‘Animal Encounter’. Much to my surprise, this was a great interactive session where kids and adults could get close up and pet a huge range of small creatures. This included small fluffy animals, such as rats and hamsters, but also a wide range of lizards and snakes. I was really impressed that this type of encounter was included in the (very reasonable) entry fee. This was also an under cover activity, should the weather be less than good.

The more unusual animals did not stop there. The next activity was an owl display, where again you got an opportunity to stroke the owls afterwards. And we also took part in a ‘meet and greet’ with a big pig. It was a great chance for Daisy to experience a wide range of different animals at close quarters.

Hounslow Urban Farm: Play Areas

To be frank, I think Daisy would have been perfectly happy to stay on the indoor bouncy castle all day. There were also a number of ride-on tractors and so on in the indoor barn. There is also an outdoor play area with picnic tables. If you don’t want to bring your own snacks, there is also a small cafe, where we indulged in an ice cream and a coffee.

Hounslow Urban Farm: Key Information

Some may regard the site as a little run down, but for me that was part of the charm – it is supposed to be a farm, and it looks like it. For a London attraction, it is also a bargain at £6.50 per adult and £5 for children (2 and over), which includes all the activities mentioned (2018 prices). It is easily accessible by London underground, a 10 minute walk from Hatton Cross station on the Piccadilly line. It could perhaps make a good side-trip if you have a long layover at Heathrow airport with a toddler. There is a large, free car park if you are driving. We had a really fun day out here!

If you enjoyed reading this post, I would be absolutely delighted if you choose to show your appreciation by buying me a coffee!

  1. I love an urban farm and can’t believe we never went to hounslow since it was probably our closest when we lived in London. I think my daughter would love the owls #fearlessfamtrav

  2. You’d never think there were farms in and around London but an urban farm makes perfect sense. I must admit I have a soft spot for goats. And you’re right, if you had a lay-over at Heathrow, this could be a great place to let the kids spend a few hours away from the airport! #fearlessfamtrav

  3. We spent many hours in farms when my boys were smaller. We’ve visited this one…always great to while away an afternoon with the animals. Thanks for linking up to #fearlessfamtrav.
