Walk to Stunning Weston Mouth Beach

Weston Mouth beach is in East Devon, between Sidmouth and Seaton. The walk to Weston Mouth shingle beach is picturesque. But is the walk possible with a 4 year old and a baby? I didn’t find a detailed description of the walk from the car park. So we headed off to try it out…

Parking

There is a small, free National Trust car park at the head of the footpath. Apparently if this is full you can park at Higher Weston Farm. This is 50 metres east of the National Trust car park, just beyond the new barn conversions. Just make a donation in the charity box. We have never found the car park full though.

Once parked up, head through the gate onto the footpath. It is just under a mile from here to the beach.

The Walk

The walk starts through the woods on a clear track heading gently downhill. The shade is most welcome on a sunny day

Before long you exit the woods onto a grass track. Still heading gently downhill.

At this point, you start to get some tantilising views of the sea.

The grass track bears round to the right. And starts to drop more steeply. This section is a bit of a slog back up if it is a hot, sunny day.

At the bottom of th hill is a kissing gate, leading you to a set of steps.

The last section of the walk down to the beach is actually part of the South West Coast Path.

The steps are well defined and not too steep or narrow. Our 4 year old managed them fine unassisted. Both up and down. And carrying the baby up and down in the carrier was not too tough. I recommend our LittleLife backpack carrier for this walk with a baby. I’m not great with heights and steep steps but had no problem with these (unlike some parts of the coast path!)

There are plenty of pretty stunning beach views on the way down if you need a breather.

And then all of a sudden you are on the shingle beach. Which we have found to be very quiet even on sunny days.

Weston Mouth Beach

This is the view to the west along the beach. Apparently this end is popular with nudists. But I haven’t walked along to investigate.

This is the view to the east. There is a cliff fall marking the end of the beach.

If you are looking for a different walk back, this path the other side of the river heads up to The Donkey Sanctuary.

The river is a great spot for our 4 year old to play. The beach here shelves steeply into the sea, so it is nice to have a safer spot for her to play in the water.

All in all, I think this is a great beach. It is one of my favourite beaches in the area. We really enjoy the walk to Weston Mouth Beach. And even don’t mind the walk back from the beach too. It has always been quiet when we visit. I’m not sure what puts people off. No facilities? The walk? The nudists?
